چکیده

Denitrification was studied in a batch culture, using different concentrations acetate (95 and 140 ppm), benzene (25 and 35 ppm) and toluene (25 and 40 ppm). In the assays with acetate the substrate consumption efficiency (Efs) of N-NO3 and C-acetate was superior to 92%. The yield (YP/S) in the N2formation was 0.99. Contrary to this, when benzene was used the denitrification was not carried out. When toluene was used the Ef for toluene and nitrate was equal to 100% and the YP/S was 0.97 at 6 days of the assay. A decrease in the specific consumption rate in toluene presence was detected in comparison to acetate assays. It was found that toluene was completely denitrified, using an inoculum that was not acclimatized to the consumption of hydrocarbons.

Feasibility study of benzene and toluene removal from air by phytoremediation

Introduction: Phytoremediation is one of the available techniques for removing the volatile organic compound from the air. Benzene and toluene are volatile organic compounds that exist in many occupational environments. Plants are able to reduce benzene and toluene in the air and the use of plants is a simple and consistent solution for the nature to reduce these compositions in the air and imp...

The effect of respiratory exposure to benzene, toluene, xylene and ethyl benzene on the spirometric indices among the petroleum products loading workers

Abstract Background and Aim: Benzene, toluene, xylene and ethyl benzene (BTEX) are the most important aromatic compounds in petroleum products. BTEX compounds due to their high vapor pressure, easily change to gas form and mixed with ambient air. Petroleum products loading workers are exposed to these compounds by the inhalation of BTEX compounds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ef...

Cancer Risk Assessment Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene (BTEX) in the Production of Insulation Bituminous

Benzene, Toluene, Ethyl Benzene and Xylene are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with approximately similar physical and chemical characteristics. Benzene and Ethyl-benzene are known carcinogen as well as they affect the circulatory, nervous, and reproductive and respiratory systems. Toluene and Xylene also damage the nervous and reproductive systems. The main purpose of this study is to determ...

Photocatalytic Degradation of Benzene and Toluene in Aqueous Medium

The resource intensive human activities (such as mining and extraction of mineral oils for betterment of life and modernization of society) have increased environmental pollution several folds. Products of mining and petrochemical industries are advantageous for the modern society. But waste generated such as BTEX from such industries are carcinogenic, toxic and causes adverse effects on enviro...

An Evaluation of the Adsorption Potential of MWCNTs for Benzene and Toluene Removal

In order to evaluate the adsorption potential of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) for benzene, toluene and xylenes (BTX), the adsorption capacities of benzene and toluene on two different MWCNTs were measured using a gas-chromatography (GC) and then compared with each other. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) was employed to investigate the presence of f...
